Stained or discolored teeth can put a damper on your self-confidence and keep you from living your best life. Fortunately for you, stained teeth are not a permanent problem. Here at Advanced Dental of Westport, CT, we have a lasting solution for patients struggling with discolored teeth. Our in-house teeth bleaching treatments are guaranteed to make the smile of your dreams a reality.
Causes of Tooth Discoloration
If your teeth are significantly discolored, it could be as a result of one or more of several reasons. Some prevalent causes of tooth discoloration include:
- Overindulgence in staining foods and drinks such as coffee, red wine, dark berries, etc.
- Use of tobacco. This includes smoking and chewing.
- Poor dental hygiene.
- Effect of certain medications.
- Dental fillings such as silver amalgam fillings can cause your teeth to become discolored.
- The effects of aging. As you grow older, the outer enamel layer becomes thinner, thus revealing the darker dentin layer, a process that causes your teeth to look yellow.
- Excessive fluoride intake can stain your teeth.
- Trauma.
During your visit, our dentist will explore the root source of your tooth discoloration to advise on the best course of treatment.
Your In-House Teeth Whitening Appointment
Before we begin your teeth bleaching procedure, we will clean your teeth thoroughly to eliminate food debris and bacteria, as well as plaque and tartar. Next, our dentist will place gum protectors in your mouth to protect your soft tissues against the hydrogen peroxide—the whitening agent. Peroxide is caustic and can cause burns to soft tissues. We take great care to ensure you’re protected throughout your whitening procedure.
Once we have put in place protective measures to keep your cheeks, gums, and lips safe, our dentist applies the whitening agent to your teeth. You’ll then lie back under a special light that activates the whitening agent. Because of this special light and the fact that we use a whitening agent that is stronger than what you’d find over the counter, in-house bleaching produces brighter results compared to at-home whitening.
Every 20 minutes, we’ll rinse off the whitening agent and re-apply a fresh coat. We’ll repeat this process until your teeth are as bright and white as you want them to be.
Depending on our dentist’s assessment and your preferences, you may receive fluoride treatment at the end of your tooth bleaching session. Give us a call today to schedule an appointment.
